(* The pictures I am showing are from our last night in Luxor on February 28th)

We have left Egypt .  We were not scheduled to leave for about another week.  But, our lunatic president started a war here in the Middle East on Ramadan, the holiest time of the year for Muslims,  and this morning we learned we killed Iran’s Supreme Cleric leader.  We did this working alongside Israel who is also launching attacks and our principle ally.

As back drop to all of this, the Muslim Brotherhood - an Islamist organization founded in 1928 and supports Sharia Law - used to be in power here in Egypt.  After the 2011 uprising, the group’s Freedom and Justice Party won power, and its candidate, Mohamed Morsi, became president in 2012. Following widespread protests, the military led by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi,  ousted Morsi in 2013.  Today,  the group is severely suppressed in Egypt, with its leadership imprisoned or in exile. It operates primarily in secret due to the ban and ongoing government crackdown.  And Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, although no longer a general, is still in power as President for life.   He in very unpopular except among the wealthy here.

We talked about it a lot.  I should be clear, at least where we are at in Luxor, at no time did we feel in danger and there was no real change out on the streets that we observed.  Life here, as chaotic as it can be, appears to be going on normally.  We have seen no protests.  The U.S. State Department has issued a higher threat level, but not a severe alert.  To my knowledge, Egypt does not have an alliance with Iran.

However, there is no love lost here for Israel.  Given the horrific situation with Gaza, which Egypt borders, Israel is universally despised here.  This feeling is understandable and greatly over shadows any ill will felt for Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. We hear this with passing comments from taxi drivers and vendors.

Locals tell us there is nothing to worry about.  Tourism is very important to Egypt and they will do everything to protect it.  I am sure that is true.

But….at our own hotel.

Above is the security at the entry to our hotel.  There is always one or two guys sitting here always looking at their phones. They never look up.  I routinely set off the metal detector due to my phone, and they never question me or stop me.  People walk around them all they time.  So let's just say security does not leave us full of confidence.

We both realize that we are likely treating anxiety only.  People here have been warm, inviting and, other than constantly wanting tips, non threatening.  We have had a truly memorable visit and its a shame to cut it short.

However, the move seems prudent.  We will miss the Pyramids but we have been fortunate to already have seen so much. Also we were not alone. We met at least a dozen other travelers not only from the U.S. but other Western countries all cancelling their plans and getting out.

As crazy as this is, it has happened to us before.  Click here -

So, currently we are in Milan, Italy. This stop was always a part of the plan.  We were going to spend a few days here before flying out of Zurich, Switzerland and coming home.

We feel a little better being farther away and we have a few extra days in Italy, so that’s not so bad.

About Us

I was waiting for a baby to be born.  It was the fall of 2015 and I had been a practicing OB/GYN for over 20 years.  I could sense it was a time for change in my life.  With new insight to what was possible, we started fantasizing about what this new life could look like.  We starting to call it our “Road to Bali.”  We didn’t know exactly where it would lead, but are so glad we took the first steps into this new adventure.  We hope you enjoy coming along on our “Road to Bali.”
